Elizabeth Goodhue has been advocating for her son William for 33 years. Their story starts in a New Hampshire hospital room when she knew he had Down syndrome, but like everyone else, was too scared to say it. In The Truth About Down Syndrome: Lessons Learned from Raising a Son with Trisomy-21, Elizabeth traces their journey through a maze of social, governmental, medical, and school bureaucracies. Her mission since his birth has been to bust stereotypes around unique abilities and to share her experience with parents, educators, social workers, doctors, administrators, and anyone else touched by someone who differs from the norm.

In 2014, Elizabeth Goodhue left her teaching career of 24 years and moved to Mexico. One year later, she moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. While living in Kuala Lumpur, she challenged herself to find a different café every weekend, only using public transportation or walking. It was in these cafés that her blog, thetruthaboutdownsyndrome.com, began. When she returned to the states in 2018, she used her blog to write her story The Truth About Down Syndrome: Lessons Learned from Raising a Son with Trisomy-21. Her book is a series of vignettes about raising her son William, now 33 years old. It weaves their lives together and provides insight into her experience and growth as a mother, educator, adventurer, and advocate.
Next up in the Peterborough Presents series is Bob Beck, who will speak about archaeology in Romania in July.
