Eben Jones ClassroomThis month we will be reading, "Peace Like a River" by Leif Enger. Click on the event title for more information.
A “reminder of why we read fiction to begin with” (San Francisco Chronicle), Enger's bestselling debut novel Peace Like a River, won the Booksense Award for Fiction and was named one of the Year's Best Books by Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. Handsomely written, rich with the feel and flavor of the plains—and suited mainly for those whose yearnings are in the down-home, just-folks style of the godly. (Kirkus Reviews, June 1, 2001). Hailed as one of the years top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers.
The quiet 1960s midwestern life of the Land family--father Jeremiah, and children, Reuben, Davy and Swede--is upended when Davy kills two teenage boys who have come to harm the family. On the morning of his sentencing, Davy escapes from his cell and the Lands set out in search of him. Their search is at once a heroic quest, a tragedy, a love story, and a haunting meditation on the possibility of magic in the everyday world.
"Peace Like a River" can be found on OverDrive as an e-book or an audiobook: https://nh.overdrive.com/media/1271681
