About the instructor:
Alejandro Herrera was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with the inspiration and aspiration for teaching since he was a teenager hanging out in Santo Domingo´s villages.
In 1979, Hurricane David devastated his home island, sweeping away many villages, leaving over 200,000 people homeless. Alejandro’s passion for teaching and volunteerism grew as he found ways to help those who were displaced. Engaged in hosting refugee families in his high school, he started teaching literacy and life skills understanding that a hand-up is ever more effective than a hand-out.
He studied Economics at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. His graduate studies led him to the National University of Costa Rica where he majored in Ecological Economics. After graduating, he returned to the Dominican Republic and spent more than 20 years building his career teaching sustainable development and economics at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo.
In 2006-2007, Alejandro participated in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program in Economic Development focused on sustainable tourism at Michigan State University and George Washington University sponsored by the U.S State Department.
Since 2017, Alejandro has lived in the Monadnock region where he has been an active volunteer, giving his time to the Colonial Theater, Hillside Spring Farm, Keene Restorative Justice Program, Project Home, Monadnock Afghan Resettlement Program, Keene Community Kitchen, Keene Public Library, and Keene International Festival.
Alejandro enjoys learning and teaching as well as listening to music, dancing and cooking. He recently started playing alto sax and participating in the Monadnock New Horizon Band. This winter he has chosen downhill skiing as his next lifelong learning adventure.
Peterborough Town Library, located downtown at the corner of Main and Concord/Rt 202, has a large meeting room, study rooms, classroom, and a board room available to the public.
